Split Screen

Split Screen:

I used this video to conduct research into how to use the split screen effect. It broke it down step by step in order for me to replicate this in my music video. I applied this to a shot split into quarters of Jack Playing the Guitar and a shot into thirds of myself singing. The reason I did this as it is apparent in the genre and a big convention on the editing side.

Overall, this research was done to make sure I use this technique well and in order to make the music video fit the genre and to a good quality.

Colour Isolation

Colour Isolation:

This video is a tutorial on how to do colour isolation. This video helped guide me on how to do colour isolation for my music video. I have applied it on the opening sequence of the song in various shots highlighting specific objects. This is mainly conventions of the Britpop genre i.e. Clothing and instruments, to help exaggerate the conventions.  This technique has been used in Wonderwall original video itself.

To summarise, this research was done to help give me guidance in order to use this technique for starters as well as to a high standard.

Filming Log - Session 5 - Re-shoot

Filming Log - Session 5 - Re-shoot:
Due to lip syncing issues and lack of guitar shots of Jack as well as band orientated shots too we felt it was necessary to go out and get more shots. We revisited locations previously used (Smith's Field and Balmoral Road) to gain the footage we needed. We came prepared with notes on what we reviewed and was required to be redone to make the filming process quicker.

We began at Smith's field recording Jack and the guitar for starters. We filmed him in a series of different shots either focusing on the guitar singly or him performing. We involved still shots and some tracking shots to. We decided on this as he was very stationary and felt like he need more movement. We also decided to get shots of him messing about to portray the band as being Laddish. This closely interlinks with Goodwin's theory of promoting the bands attitude. After we gained this we began by reciting the lyrics off the paper that need to be redone by myself. We then re did the shots necessary exactly as it was on the rough edit as we felt that shot types weren't an issue in this case but in fact the lip syncing being the problem. In some cases, we added new shots in addition to see if it could make the final cut.

Once completed we headed over to Balmoral Road to recruit some group shots and a few more lip syncing issues. On arrival we recorded group shots and experimented with new shots we thought we could include. After this we recorded lip syncing issues in new shots as we felt it was repetitive in this section of the music video. These included group shots and different angled shots to see if it would work.

However, is some clips it began to snow. This will make it awkward in the editing stages as the weather will be different when cutting from one shot to the next.

Overall, it was a successful session with us managing to get everything done that we set out to do and making sure it was a good quality for us to include in the editing process.

Editing Session Feedback 6

Editing Session Feedback 6:

This is a video on specific information on what to do with the music video for it to be complete and the final product. We also asked other people too but this video and everyone else stated that to improve it was the lip syncing. This is because it was out of place just a little bit. This can be edited to make lip syncing precise and making video look professional.

Another thing that was suggested was adding special effects to the music video. This included colour isolation and split screen effects. This is because it has been included in the genre. Colour isolation was used in Wonderwall music video itself highlighting the guitar. We are looking to include this to help make genre conventions stronger. Split screens should be included too. This is because it is again used in Wonderwall. this would make are conventions look stronger on the editing side of the video. Transitions was another aspect we got in feedback. Fades and flashes were the main transitions mentioned to help portray the mood of the song as well as matching conventions.

Another thing required was the removal of live footage of Liam Gallagher performing Wonderwall. This is because of copyright purposes as there could be a possibility of a company recording the concert and having the rights. We will remove this as we don't want to break copyright law as well as coming to the realisation that it doesn't fit.

Apart from that everybody we interviewed enjoyed the music video and said it reflects the genre well. I will fix up the lip syncing as well as researching and applying special effects and transitions to the music video.

Editing Log - Session 6

Editing Log - Session 6:

This session consisted of primarily working on the feedback we had received from session 5. This is done to help guide is in the direction of making it look a good quality to the audience as well as meeting our own targets. The session including shots focusing more on the narrative side will help us meet the requirements of a stereotypical music video.

Working around and filling in spaces from sessions 5 heavy lip syncing synchronising, we added as many shots as we could. Including more of the band members as asked. The tools used were blade. This is because we wanted to include as many as we could and splitting the shots up and using different parts of the same shot at different points helped us achieve this. Also, we used the transition tools to include fades at the end of the music video. This was done to match the audio of Wonderwall and more dramatic effect (Goodwin's theory). This is because enigma is created as Lucy's eyes are seen looking at the audience to kind of say that she can see and identify you but you can’t. This adds to the enigma and dramatic effect as the semantic and symbolic codes are used from Barthes' codes. This is because people would become aggregated as they want to know who I am singing about and what the song means. This makes the audience engage with the text and question meaning encoding and decoding (Halls' theory).

Also, to add to the binary opposition side of the narrative, the more shots of Lucy and the band used showed the difference in location. This is because Lucy is at a water front of as pond which is heavily linked with rural areas. Also, the band are recorded with a brick wall background and that being heavily linked to urban areas. This helped us portray the relationship between working class to urban areas and higher classes in rural areas. This helps us make the meaning of song aimed at social barriers stopping relationships between social classes. with the lyrics 'There are many things that I Would like to say to you but I don't know how' helps enforce this.

After adding the shots, were watched the final product carefully trying to spot errors. We made sure cuts were smooth and would not produce a black screen flash. This helped us make it look more professional and to a good standard. Once this was done we reviewed at a second time to make sure we didn't miss any transitions out. This helped us display that are music video was a good quality.

Overall, during this editing session we completed a rough edit of our music video. We used several tools to help us accomplish this. The aim of this session was to emphasise how key the narrative was focusing on non-performing parts of the music video to help make it look like a proper, industry standard music video. We used several theories to help guide us in the direction we wanted and audience feedback to make sure that are target audience would like it. This rough edit will be shown are focus group we took to gain guidance on any aspects that could be improved and help decide our final product.

Editing Session Feedback 5

Editing Session Feedback 5:

The feedback will carry over from session 4 due to not acting upon it last time due to overruling the feedback to help benefit us in the future. This target will be prioritised for the next session by including more shots of the band members in the music video.

Also, improvements to be made would be to sort at shots and make them closer together. This is because cuts started flashing up a black screen as they weren't directly after each other. By stopping the milliseconds of black screens and piecing shots together it will make it look more professional as well as continuity from different shots.

Editing Log - Session 5

Editing Log - Session 5:

In the fifth session today we listened to feedback kind of from session 4. This is because the target was to include more band member shots. However, the group agreed and over ruled this target. Due to a time limit and people having to go places we decided that we should lip sync the parts of me singing from the chorus to the end of the song. We left gaps in order to include other shots later on. We decided to do this as if we get the hard part out the way by session 6 we should be finished by just including shots relative for the narrative then.

A few negatives was that my lip syncing didn't match the audio that we had with the longer notes not fitting. We made the most of the clip and what we had using the cut and blade tool getting parts that were relative to use and matched the audio of wonderwall. This worked really well for us as it meant there were lots of slots available for future shots of the band, myself and Lucy to make the narrative clear and show importance with it dominating the final part of the music video, when it matters.

In a whole this session helped us establish what to do for session 6 as well as progress with lip syncing. Using tools to help guide us and overcoming an obstacle with notes and my lip syncing. Getting the hardest task out the way was key for us to make the job easier in the next session and hopefully completing it. This was a massive step in heading towards completion as we have a clear plan of what to do next.

Editing Session Feedback 4

Editing Session Feedback 4:

The feedback we received was positive saying that they liked the techniques we used, conventions, narrative and story telling that was on display for the audience. They however said that they feel like more band shots are needed due to me taking up too many shots. Even though i am the main singer and should be in most the shots there is till and uneven share between the band. This will be worked upon in the next session when proceeding with our product.

Editing Log - Session 4

Editing Log - Session 4:
This session I was in attendance with both the Jacks also there to help. The idea of this session was to get as many shots as we can into the music video during this session. This would include several shots of band members, Lucy and myself lip syncing.

The idea was to piece together as shots to complete the chorus of the song as this bit was incomplete. Learning on mistakes and overcoming it this session was very successful. We completed what we aimed to do in the time limit we had.

We again used several tools such as the cut tool to gain the correct part to the clip, blade tool to create continuity from shot to shot and the turning down of the sound on the clip which isn't required. We also looked carefully by creating a relationship with the beat of the music. This is one of Goodwin's ideas. This was done by creating quick cuts alternating from two shots to exaggerate the instruments in the video.

This session we made a massive stride to making it suit the genre conventions. Using the correct shots and emphasising the narrative of binary oppositions with rural and urban establishing shots clear. Enigma also created as Lucy's face is not completely identifiable and semantic and symbolic features being used, of Barthes codes, as the audience question what the lyrics mean and who the main singer is singing about. In addition, using Goodwin's theory of relationships to the audio of the song helped us make it look professional.

Editing Session Feedback 3

Editing Session Feedback 3:

The feedback that was received was a positive on what was edited. The beginning of the music video shots that was varied and established the setting was what was praised. It was said to help explain narrative and setting and showed qualities of a Britpop music videos including conventions. This will help us in the future as we know that we don't have to edit the intro in the future due to it having positive feedback.

In the next editing session, we will focus on adding more shots of Lucy (Mysterious girl) as well as adding more shots of myself lip syncing and the band. The target is to do this as well as trying not to show to much of Lucy's whole face and piecing together the lip syncing a little better trying to make sure it matches our non-diegetic sound of the audio of the song.

Editing Log - Session 3

Editing Log - Session 3:
During this session I was unavailable to attend due to a university interview that day, so this left both Jack's doing the editing. Off of the feedback and reviewing the footage from that editing session there were more shots added at the start as well as quicker cuts in addition, this not showing Lucy's (mystery girl) identity at this point.

This yet again involved using the blade tool to split shots into parts we want and piecing it together alongside other clips to gain continuity and a good flow of shots. They also used the trimming tool again to get specific parts of the shots as well as removing the 3 seconds before and after.

This session off of feedback from the Jack's was basically adding more shots at the beginning due to self-feedback between them of shots being too long and not varied at the start of the music video.

As a whole I don't think we progressed the way we initially thought the session out to be but some progress was made in adding shots at the start to make it clear of the genre conventions we tried to portray as well as our narrative of binary opposition (urban vs rural) and Barthes codes about mystery of the song and its means. This being clear at the start helps the audience get the narrative for the rest of the music video.
