Editing Session Feedback 2:

Edited solely by me, I gained audience feedback saying that I worked very well upon last times feedback, session 1 of editing including what need to be done. I returned to the same people and this time they said continue on what you are doing as well as trying to make cuts quicker when including Lucy to make sure no one can see her facial features as it is a part of the narrative. Both Jack Rundle and Jack Davenport agreed on this. I will take this feedback on board and continue it into next session as well as both Jacks doing the same.

During this editing session we continued with feedback making sure worked upon feedback given off the target audience. Individually I did this by piecing the start of the music video in time of the lyrics due to it not being in perfect, symmetrical timing. I also added more varied shots including shots of the mysterious girl (Lucy Carter) as well as more shots of myself lip syncing the song and walking. 

I did this by using tools such as blade to cut off any unnecessary parts of the clips preciously, trim down the clips to get the correct parts of the clips accurately as well as removing diegetic sound of surroundings during the original clips and overriding it with the Wonderwall audio. 

I also tried to include many different angles and clips to show representation of the genre when recording myself. Also, I did this when recording Lucy to create enigma and mystery, coinciding with Goodwin’s theory with lyrics and visuals relating, of who the song is about (this being Noel Gallagher singing about his love and us trying to replicate). Using the blade tool, it helped me access and do this by keeping continuity of shots and putting different angles of her walking not revealing her identity too much. 

During this session, I feel like I completed and made a lot of progress upon the product adding and constructing the music video from start to the chorus using various shots and techniques on the guidance of feedback gained after the first editing session. Overall, I think we as group should continue like this suing as many shots we can and making sure lip syncing is on point and time.

Editing Session Feedback 1 :

Above is the edit of what I have edited so far along with the help of Jack Davenport's and Jack Rundle's Ideas as well as my own. This was the first stage of editing we completed. We asked for some feedback off of some friends to help us progress in the future of this task. The majority stated that to work on the lip syncing aspect of the music video and involve more varied shots. This will be included next time in the editing session to make it suitable for the audience as well as match our needs of looking professional and that it should belong within the Britpop genre with the conventions included.

Editing Log - Session 1

Editing Log - Session 1:

The first session of editing primarily focused on uploading the content to the mac on to the software, Final Cut Pro x. It took around 20 minutes to upload on to final cut pro and due to lots of shots that we have taken making the process longer. 

After the content from our SD card finally was uploaded I began to download the song, Wonderwall, off of a MP3 download. This took 2 minutes and we added it to our film footage on final cut pro.

When downloaded and all our content lined up and ready to edit we began to match close ups of myself lip syncing to the actual audio of the song. Using several shots and precisely matching footage in timing with audio to make it look like I am singing. I mainly edited on this session cutting shots, splitting shots up using the blade tool and turning down the volume of shots to get rid of background noise. Jack Davenport and Jack Rundle helped put ideas forward of what shot would look good in certain aspects of the song. Their opinion helped create some good shots as well as my ideas also being brought to the table.

When we first reviewed our footage we were quite proud of what we had produced from the filming aspect as it has been bettered from last year's AS task as camera quality has improved, continuity of shots and varied amount of shots.

From this editing session we can take away the positives of idea contributions and creativity of the whole group adding the music video. We took on most ideas and this will benefit us in the next session with these ideas hopefully being put forward further along the editing process. However, the negative of this session was the time it took to upload our footage to the Apple Mac. This could have been solely focused on more editing rather than waiting and wasting 20 minutes. 

Filming Log - session 4 - King George's Lake

Filming Log - Session 4 - King George's Lake:

On Saturday the 13th of January 2018 filming took place of the recording of the 'mysterious girl', played by Lucy Carter, At King George's Lake, Altrincham. We met just after 1 at around 1:15 pm due to other commitments elsewhere. Me, Jack Davenport and Lucy Carter then discussed what was expected of Lucy. Me and Jack then discussed what we needed to do in terms of shot type and location shots to match our narrative and genre type as well as reviewing the storyboard and lyric sheet. We began filming at around 1:25 pm.

Firstly, we got Lucy to walk to the lake front. We did this suing several shots types thinking of as many as we could on top of the sheet notes we had taken and reviewed. We used shots such as tracking, point of view, medium shot, low angle and many more to help portray the mystery of who Lucy is linking to the song of who it is actual aimed at building on enigma. These shots took around 40-45 minutes to record.

Once we gained the shots we wanted and were pleased with making sure it promoted continuity from shot to shot we recorded Lucy on the waterfront. On a small platform on the waterfront we recorded Lucy displaying here emotions. We decided that the song would signify she is angry to about the circumstances the song sings about being in love but not saying it either. We did this by her throwing rocks in the water to signify her anger towards the situation created within the narrative. We also added close ups of facial features in order to create enigma and a slight but not complete image of Lucy's Identity to the audience. There were also establishing shots taken of her on the waterfront to exaggerate the binary opposition of urban vs rural areas to help portray that due to class differences they can't be together. 

This was the final filming session meaning editing is to come next. In the future this post can be reflected to help create the conventions and image to portray our narrative in the music video within the editing stages to make it to its bets potential.

Filming Log - session 3 - Altrincham, Balmoral Road

Filming Log - session 3 - Altrincham, Balmoral Road:

This day of footage took place on the 6th of January 2018 at Balmoral Road, Altrincham. We met at 1 pm and started filming at around 1:10pm after setting up for shots and reviewing what needed to be done using the story board and lyrics sheet notes we have created.

After this we began focusing on filming Jack D on the guitar to get various shots and angles of him. This was key as the guitar is the main instrument within the song. We did low angle shots and long shots to show the presence of the guitar and its importance. In pretty much every shot jack is in the guitar is emphasis its importance. Close ups of the guitar and different angles were used too to display this. 

About 20 minutes later we started filming Jack R in various shots as an individual. It was hard to include him at times due to just being a band member but he couldn't be the drummer due to having no access to drums. We included him in shots to show his presence in the band. This then took about 10 minutes to complete.

Next we returned to me lip syncing wonder wall in individual and group shots. This was important as it was key to make it look like a band music video due to lack of band footage available from the Smiths field recording. These shots included close ups, mid shots and long shots both me as an individual and as a band. When this was completed we decided on doing tracking shots using Jack's car to follow me walking and singing the song. 

For the duration of this filming session we wore the same clothes to put into effect the Britpop genre convention of fashion and attire worn. We also used the brick wall as a key shot for the song and the long road to show the urban qualities and to display conventions. We also followed the structure of 3 seconds before 3 seconds after to get the correct and most important bits for shots we required. In addition, we also left the camera running in certain shots and had assigned standing places for shots using roadwork painting to match the shots. 

This post was used to summarise what we did on recording day and our intentions. This can be helped in the future for us editing and help portray what we wanted to do for the music video and display the conventions we our trying to put across to the audience. 


    

Filming Log - Session 2 - Smiths Field

Filming Log - Session 2 - Smiths Field:

This day of footage took place on the 29th of December 2017 at Smith's Field, Timperley. We met at 12 pm and started filming promptly at around 12:10pm after setting up equipment ready for the filming session ahead. 

We filmed various shots at different angles at varied places of the alleyway to help gain best shots possible for our music video to fit the genre conventions, look professional as well as matching the narrative of Barthes Codes and binary oppositions of locations which will take place later on. This was all based off of our storyboard and order of shots we decided to do to help portray the image we want. Due to shots we wanted in chronological order that we had wrote down prepared, helped us save time overall. It also made us aware of what actions and band members were needed in each shot. 

In addition to preparation of shots, we also started filming 3 seconds before the actual part was needed and 3 seconds after. This helped us gain the right shot as well as help us out in editing in the future. This will help us select the correct bits we want and make sure it looks to a satisfactory level. But most importantly this will help us with having shot continuity in the final product as we can select the correct parts of the specific clip and piece it together correctly. This will also help us avoid missing out any lip syncing parts in the clip too as well as being able to gain more clips if need be. 

Throughout this filming session we tried to highlight Britpop conventions by highlighting fashion choices. This was done by having a tracking shot of the shoes worn as well as close ups of the brand logo centre of the frame to specify importance. This connotes the genre well due to fashion being a highlighted importance of the genre. Close up shots were also taken of the guitar to highlight its importance in the song as the majority of it is guitar based as well as a key instrument in the genre as a whole.  We also portrayed the conventions through location choices making it look urban. The location itself has tram tracks next to it highlighting its urban qualities and artificial structure around. It too is portrayed with shots helping show the genre conventions with attitude being shown as being superior to chevron else in shots. This is done by putting me, the singer, being in the majority of the shots. 

We finished at around 2:30 pm collecting all the shots we needed. We spent 15 minutes at the end of this session discussing how we can make it better for the next filming session ahead and things we can add to do this.

This post helped us reflect on what we did and what we can do better in the future for filming. It also will benefit us in the editing stage by referring back to this post to do the best we can in piecing it together later. We also placed as many conventions in as possible to make it look professional and realistic as possible.
