Copyright request - Oasis - Wonderwall:

This post is required in order to gain permission to use the song Wonderwall from the record company. As it is for educational purposes this shouldn't break copyright laws and the song can be used for our final production. This was done just to show we weren't making profit out of their owned song and that it is being used for the coursework.

Changing Groups

Changing Groups:

Due to unforeseen circumstances I have moved groups to Join Jack Davenport and Jack Rundle. This is due to both Josh Worrall and Matthew Gallagher leaving the course. I will now focus on producing my group music video with Jack Davenport and Jack Rundle doing Oasis Wonderwall instead of Liam Gallagher wall of Glass. This will not affect previous research and planning as it is on the same genre and can still be applied to the new music video idea.

I conducted this to post to signify the reason why i have had to change as well as the reason research and the idea has been altered due to circumstances out of my control.

Styling Of The Artist

Styling of The Artist:

Most artists of the Britpop genre tend to wear casual clothing. This is mainly quiet retro styled clothing choices. The outfits are a simple t shirt and jeans and a pair of trainers or maybe a coat or jacket with jeans and a pair of trainers. It is very casual in fashion clothing. Most of the clothes are well known brands such as Adidas, North Face, Stone Island e.t.c. These outfits are worn in day to day life, in music videos and to award ceremonies. Accessories are also worn especially sun glasses. This is a popular trend within the genre. To add, hairstyles are mostly long as well.

The tops worn are often polo shirts, shirts or t-shirts. Mostly worn branded by the artists but it is a common thing to be worn. Brands such as Fred Perry, Stone island, Adidas are some to name a few.

The pants worn are commonly jeans. These aren't always branded or clearly branded to the public to see. Tend to be loose jeans, not tightly fitted.

Jackets and coats were varied in the genre. Parkas, Waterproof jacket, bomber jacket, tracksuit jacket. These were also branded. Brands were again common one such as Adidas, stone island, North Face, Berghaus and many more.

Shoe choice was mainly suede. This was a very popular during the Britpop era with everyone having a pair of suede shoes. Mostly Adidas shoe designs like samba and gazelles being worn by everyone.

This is key to my research as it helps gain insight on how to style the artist and make sure it fits the genre's stereotypes. It helps me choose appropriate dress wear to make it look professional as well as precipitating to perfection.

Representation of Liam Gallagher

Representation of Liam Gallagher:

Image result for young liam gallagherThroughout the years Liam Gallagher has been represented in mostly a negative way. This is partly his fault with his attitude causing this as well as newspaper gossip on the other hand.

Liam is a very eccentric character liking to speak his mind and his opinions with confidence. He has a very relaxed and careless attitude behaving how he wants when the wants. He does this as he wants to be a rock star and live the rock star life.

However, Liam's out-speaking attitude has caused him a lot of trouble gaining newspaper headlines and a bad name for himself due to his actions. You can't blame some of them due to him getting in fights with the paparazzi, misbehaving at music award ceremonies and bad naming celebrities left, right and centre. However, there are ridiculous claims capitalising on his behaviour and making money out of fake stories.

Image result for liam gallagherDespite Liam Gallagher's behaviour to the public eye people appreciate his fashion sense. Most Males, ranging from 16-50, try to replicate his fashion sense wearing brands he does or similar clothing. This tends to be most working class and lower middle class that aspire to dress like him and some try to act like him too.

Liam also has a swagger to him. He is speaks in a Mancunian accent using lots of Mancunian terms that then began to become popular and somewhat cool to use. His walk shows his attitude that he is very confident, has an attitude as well as loving himself always singing his praises and doing what he thinks best everyone else is irrelevant to him.

He is very popular due to being iconic and himself. There is very little people like him and is an individual that represents the true working class of Britain. This is very obvious with reception he gets in the working class areas when he performs there as well as many seeing him as a role model.

Below is a video displaying his attitude and behaviour in the public eye which gave him the representation of being a rebellious rock star:

This research is of use tome as it helps me gain insight and knowledge into how to make the artist lip syncing act. Looking into his media representation and his characteristics it can be rubbed off onto the performer in our music video in order to make it realistic and match codes and conventions of the Britpop genre. However, may be some issues due to myself and others in the group being in the lower middle class not working class which is common in the genre and to Liam Gallagher's reputation. This is also important as I will be representing Liam Gallagher in the music video

Wall Of Glass Lyrical Analysis

Wall of Glass Lyrical Analysis:

You would keep the secrets in ya'
You've been keeping paraphernalia, oh
I think you know
Anyone can walk up to ya'
Anyone can see right through your eyes
All night
And I don't mean to be unkind
But I see what's in your mind
And the stone you throw
Will turn back in its path
One day you'll shatter like a wall of glass
Wall of glass
Wall of glass
One day you'll shatter like a wall of glass
You believe in fascinations
And designer vaccinations, love
You get along
You were sold a one direction
I believe the resurrection's on
And you were wrong
And I don't mean to be unkind
But I see what's in your mind
And the stone you throw
Will turn back in its path
One day you'll shatter like a wall of glass
Wall of glass
Wall of glass
One day you'll shatter like a wall of glass
And I don't mean to be unkind
But I see what's in your mind
And the stone you throw
Will turn back in its path
One day you'll shatter like a wall of glass
Wall of glass
Wall of glass
One day you'll shatter like a wall of glass

Analysis:

The lyrics are very aggressive and hostile lyrics. 'Shatter like a wall of glass' portrays this a violent song due it being a violent act smashing glass and quite rebellious. Unkind, wrong and throw suggest an argument of some sort which might be message to his brother, Noel, in an attempt to say you want last long if you keep doing what you're doing i.e. shatter like a wall of glass suggesting he going to collapse and become worthless as well as meaningless.

This links to Barthes codes due to aggressive narrative (action), it is difficult to understand who he’s talking about is it his brother Noel? (Enigma). It makes the audience question true meaning and if it is aimed at Noel creates a sort of hype to see if he is going at Noel. The language suggests that he has said various times that Noel isn't like the one he knew of Oasis 'see right through your eyes' suggest that Liam is trying to say Noel has put on an act and isn't himself and has changed to fit with modern times and gain money and popularity(Semiotic). This allows it to be applied and others to make conspiracies about it and think is he actually aiming the song at Noel or not (Symbolic).

The reason he has applied this in his Lyrics is due to the fact he fell out with him and hasn't spoken to him in years. He is taking digs it him in a sense to become a little bit closer to him. He has said in various interviews he wants Oasis back and the 'old' Noel. This shows these lyrics are somewhat aimed at Noel as well as coming back on the scene and provoking his brother to do something and he has by responding with an album coming up called Noel Gallagher's high flying birds - who built the moon.

This is relevant as i can use these lyrics and hidden meanings to be sent across and displayed to the audience applying Goodwin's theory by using relationship between visuals, lyrics and the music videos. It would help put the message of the song across as well as looking professional.

Wall of Glass - Music Video Analysis

Wall of Glass Music Video Analysis:

Sound:
Diegetic is the vocals as in the song as lyrics being song are visible through Liam Gallagher Singing them. Non Diegetic is the instruments used in the song as no band is relevant are displayed in the music video making it that but it belongs to be part of the song.

Lighting:
The lighting is low key in places but bright vibrant colours are added to see Liam singing. Very big contrast as it is mainly dark but some colours are used to add brightness. It matches the mood as it is a very heavy song and the mood is portrayed through lights as very aggressive and hostile with flashing flights and dull dark coloured lighting.

Shot types:
Most are close ups of Liam singing. matching Goodwin's theories with lyrics 'I can see what is in your mind' and a close up of the face is used. Also, very intimidating song and to match it intimidating lyrics. Mirror shots also show intimidation with many deaths stares at the camera. Also, camera movements used are a lot of zoom ins and out towards and from the subject, Liam. Liam is in every shot and dominant helping get across an intimidating message and attitude linking to Dyer's Star Theory of showing artist characteristics. All very basic camera shots throughout. All cuts in the music video. When the pace of the song picks up so do the cuts jumping back and forth in time with the beat of the song. no over ones very basic methods and techniques used.

Narrative:
The narrative of the music video is non-linear its mainly just a performance of the song. If anything it would be Levi-Strauss due to binary oppositions. This because of Liam and Noel Gallagher fall out it seems like Liam is calling Noel out or it is about him and this song displays this theory as many shots are Liam looking directly down the lenses trying to give that message.

Representation:
Liam matched the conventions perfectly. Wearing casual clothing, an attitude about him in his actions and putting across a message, an urban area in an abandoned type building and some violence when smashing the glass. Typical Britpop song with heavy guitar and rums and accent can be heard throughout which is a typical thing that define Britpop.

This is of use to me in my research due to being able to gain ideas and knowledge from the original music video. As well as using my own ideas with a hybrid with the original video this post can help me determine the outcome of it and how it should look.

Song Choice -Liam Gallagher - Wall of Glass

Song Choice:

Looking at various Britpop bands and classic songs we came to the conclusion of using Liam Gallagher's Wall Of Glass. This was because it was a fairly recent song that fitted the genre as well as a big comeback, for arguably the biggest name within the genre, as a solo artist. This would suit the target audience as it applies to current Hollywood demographics as it is in the charts as well as the main-streamers during the Britpop era waiting on Liam's return.

It is also useful to use this song due to the fact Liam Gallagher being from Manchester as well as ourselves we can use Manchester urban locations in the song, narrative and music video. This matches the conventions of the music video genre and we will use this to our advantage due to living local to a great place to get the stereotypes of the genre in.
