Filming Log - Session 2 - Smiths Field

Filming Log - Session 2 - Smiths Field:

This day of footage took place on the 29th of December 2017 at Smith's Field, Timperley. We met at 12 pm and started filming promptly at around 12:10pm after setting up equipment ready for the filming session ahead.

We filmed various shots at different angles at varied places of the alleyway to help gain best shots possible for our music video to fit the genre conventions, look professional as well as matching the narrative of Barthes Codes and binary oppositions of locations which will take place later on. This was all based off of our storyboard and order of shots we decided to do to help portray the image we want. Due to shots we wanted in chronological order that we had wrote down prepared, helped us save time overall. It also made us aware of what actions and band members were needed in each shot.

In addition to preparation of shots, we also started filming 3 seconds before the actual part was needed and 3 seconds after. This helped us gain the right shot as well as help us out in editing in the future. This will help us select the correct bits we want and make sure it looks to a satisfactory level. But most importantly this will help us with having shot continuity in the final product as we can select the correct parts of the specific clip and piece it together correctly. This will also help us avoid missing out any lip syncing parts in the clip too as well as being able to gain more clips if need be.

Throughout this filming session we tried to highlight Britpop conventions by highlighting fashion choices. This was done by having a tracking shot of the shoes worn as well as close ups of the brand logo centre of the frame to specify importance. This connotes the genre well due to fashion being a highlighted importance of the genre. Close up shots were also taken of the guitar to highlight its importance in the song as the majority of it is guitar based as well as a key instrument in the genre as a whole.  We also portrayed the conventions through location choices making it look urban. The location itself has tram tracks next to it highlighting its urban qualities and artificial structure around. It too is portrayed with shots helping show the genre conventions with attitude being shown as being superior to chevron else in shots. This is done by putting me, the singer, being in the majority of the shots.

We finished at around 2:30 pm collecting all the shots we needed. We spent 15 minutes at the end of this session discussing how we can make it better for the next filming session ahead and things we can add to do this.

This post helped us reflect on what we did and what we can do better in the future for filming. It also will benefit us in the editing stage by referring back to this post to do the best we can in piecing it together later. We also placed as many conventions in as possible to make it look professional and realistic as possible.

Talent Release Forms

Talent Release Forms:

Luke McKendry as Liam Gallagher
Jack Davenport as Noel Gallagher
Jack Rundle as band member

It is also down to make sure they're OK with dates and with filming within them dates as well as being in the final video. Overall, this post helps us show that the people being used are content and happy to be a part of our music video.

Filming Log - session 1 - Liam Gallagher Wonderwall Live MEN Arena

Filming Log - session 1 - Liam Gallagher Wonderwall Live MEN Arena:

Filmed on the 16th December 2017, this YouTube clip I took can be used in our final product. It can be used as Audio or both Audio and visuals depending on a group decision of what to do with it during the editing stages of the project later on. I believe this is a good opportunity to use this as it is rare that Oasis songs get performed live due to the band splitting up in 2009. I capitalised on this recording of the song Wonderwall for my music video and use it to my advantage. I personally think it would be a good idea to use this clip or parts of it to show the popularity of the song and its effect on society. However, the negative is that the singing obviously from the crowd won't be the best compared to a professional whose audio we are using to replicate and lip sync the song.

Overall, this is great chance to use live footage of Wonderwall and add to our music video to help improve it as well as display the true passion and enjoyment of the Britpop culture and, arguably, the biggest Britpop anthem to this date.

Location Research

Location Research:

MEN Arena:
Victoria Station, Hunts Bank, Manchester M3 1AR

This was only a location due to gaining live footage from here of Liam Gallagher performing our chosen song of Wonderwall to attempt to include it in the final product.

Smith's field:
Sylvan Ave, Timperley, Sale M33 3UW

Smith's field was picked as a location due to it being close to a tram line as well as having key artificial and urban features helping us display our binary oppositions between working class and upper classes with location and setting. It helped bring about conventions too because of these distinguishing features.

Balmoral Road:
Balmoral Road, Altrincham, WA15 8HJ

Again this was picked to display urban qualities with it being in a secluded back street and looking like a typical urban area. Brick wall and long wall helps exaggerates this as most shots will include this.

King George's Lake:
Timperley, Altrincham WA15 8WF

The final location is rural and picturesque to help portray the binary opposition as best as we can between rural and urban. Qualities of a water front and a forest helps this. Bright and vibrant area too showing a better life contrasting from a dull urban area helping our narrative of binary opposition. It also helps us display the mysterious girl being hard to get to due to class status and her having a better life.

This post was conducted in order to show reasons for these locations to be used listed above. It also tells me what benefits we will gain and how it will help portray the narrative and conventions in the music video.

Pratcie shots

Practice Shots:

Medium close up
Extreme close up
Close up

Over the shoulder shot
Establishing shot
Low angle shot

These shots are taken in order to practice shots for our music video. These shots relate to specific ones we will be using within the music video throughout the different locations. We have taken these in order to establish and gain potential ideas of what shots match certain locations best or parts of the song best to match the shot type. All the shots we have taken will be used more often than not to help portray the narrative of the music video we have decided and reflect the conventions of the Britpop genre to the maximum potential.

Story Board

Story Board:

This storyboard is a rough idea of the shots we will be taking to make our music video realistic and professional to the Britpop genre. This is matched by a lyric sheet annotated with shots, props and edits of things that need to be done at the time in the music video. During recording session this is the plan we will base our recording off of to make use of time scheduled to record as well as for the editing stage with in the future.

These Dates and times are the set times in which we film certain aspects of our music video. This involves us starting the work at roughly the given time and the same the ended time. At the MEN Arena I recorded Liam Gallagher perform Wonderwall Live which can be used during the music video. Smith's field section involves an alleyway and a tram bridge which looks urban matching conventions. This is here we will record the band together performing as well as Individually. This is the same at Balmoral Road with the urban effect with a long side road exaggerating the conventions. King George's lake is used as a more picturesque location to get good natural shots contrasting from the cities of being artificial and dull to bright and vibrant at King George's Lake.

This post will benefit me because its purpose is to organise with the group specific times and recording dates so we can record the specific parts required on the day. This will be letter matched with a storyboard helping us guide to the image we want to create of the band looking as close to possible like a Britpop band.

Narrative choice

Narrative choice:

There are two choices we have decided to opt for. The first being Binary opposition, conducted by Levi-Strauss. This binary opposition will be working class, Rural Versus Upper class, urban. The reason for this is the Britpop genre being commonly associated with the working class and Urban areas too being linked as being working class. We wanted to do this to hep exaggerate the convention of working class and urban areas. We decided to add a twist of adding rural areas to contrast urban areas as well as create the binary opposition theory.  This is will be apparent with the urban areas being dull and artificial compared to the rural areas being vibrant and natural showing the class difference. This is done to make a statement of class inequality.

The next theory is going to Barthes enigma codes. This will be applied through the use of the girl in our music video without showing her identity fully. There will be various shots of her but no distinguishing shot that is clear to see who I am singing about. This is because the lyrics itself can be applied to Barthes code. This is because song writer, Noel Gallagher wrote the song about a unknown girl at the time and him confessing his love towards her. We decided that this should be included in are narrative as we can link the lyrics meanings into the story line. This would add to the action element to as we tease the audience with close ups of facial features but not a clear image creating suspense to who it is. This would make it semantic to as the audience would question who it is creating mystery and debate. In addition, the symbolic link is the binary oppositions mentioned above, about class difference as well as not knowing how to approach the girl. He has the confidence to write and sing a song about her but not have the courage to speak to her.

This is a much needed post as this is required to help us construct our music video. This structure is needed to help us portray conventions within the narrative as well as assign certain shot types and editing skills further along the line in the process. It also shows are established decision of what we need to do.
