Focus Group - Hollywood Demographic

Focus Group - Hollywood Demographic:

1. Do you enjoy listening to Britpop music?

2. What do you particularly like about the music?

3. What are your opinions on the song 'Wonderwall'?

4. If you've seen the music video for Wonderwall, what do you like about it?

5. What do you think is key in order to replicate a successful Britpop music video?

6. Do you think there should be a narrative story throughout the music video?

The aim of this focus group was to specifically aim it towards one target audience. I identified in earlier research that there were to main audiences, original holly wood demographic who are now in 30's or 40's and the current Hollywood demographic 15-24.

This research is conducted on the current Hollywood demographic and is used to help broaden our ideas and to contribute towards the music videos. These questions helped us gain an insight in what to do in the music video as well as what they personally liked about things within the genre.

To conclude this research is to help determine what should be included and used in the music video as well as our own ide
as on top gained from previous researching sessions.

Survey Monkey Questionaire

Survey Monkey Questionnaire

This has been conducted in order to help develop more ideas and get an idea of what is appropriate to our audience as well gaining more creative ideas in order to make positive progress and complete the music video to a high standard.

Parent Advisory

Parent Advisory:

Parental Advisory is a sticker that warns parents that something may not be suitable for their children. The sticker is usually placed on Music CDs. This is done to inform parents that the texts of the songs contain swear words making it unsuitable for children. Parents can however allow their children listen to the music if they give them permission to.

This research was necessary as Oasis have had parental advisory stickers upon their albums before due to songs containing swear words. However, the song we are filming for our fin
al product, Wonderwall, doesn't contain any swear words in the song where as others by Oasis do.

Lip Sync

Lip Sync:

This is the process in which you mime over a song pretending to sing it. For this to be done practice is needed to learn the lyrics to the songs and make sure during the editing stage that the original song matches the music video shots miming the words. Instead of mouthing the lyrics to the camera it looks more realistic to sing the actual song. The voice can be edited out by turning the volume down on the clips and overriding it with the actual song recording.

This is key in research as my group and specifically me are lip syncing due to not being able to find anyone that can sing. This has resulted in us having to get me to to lip sync the song in order for the music video to work. We will do this by prancing before the final product in order to make it look as realistic as possible. This will be applied to the groups song choice, Wonderwall, where i will be learning the lyrics and practicing editing with the lip syncing.

Live Performance

Live Performance:

This is a thing often seen in music videos with lots of live performances demonstrated and used in music videos within the Britpop genre. Some music videos entirely use live performance for the whole of the music video. For instance, The Stone Roses

However, the majority of music videos have snip it's of the band being included with a mix of a narrative within the music video and live performance being included. An example of this is that it is used by the band we are researching into Oasis, song stand by me has a narrative involved as well as the band performing during certain shots whether it be instrument playing or singing.

This post on research is key as i can use it to my advantage. on the 16th of December i am fortunate enough to go to a Liam Gallagher concert at The MEN arena. I can gain some footage to be used in the music video and final product mixing it with the narrative in the music video.

Oasis - Wonderwall - Lyric Analysis

Oasis - Wonderwall - Lyric Analysis:

Today is gonna be the day
That they're gonna throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you gotta do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now
Backbeat, the word was on the street
That the fire in your heart is out
I'm sure you've heard it all before
But you never really had a doubt
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do about you now
And all the roads we have to walk are winding
And all the lights that lead us there are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don't know how
Because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you're my wonderwall
Today was gonna be the day
But they'll never throw it back to you
By now you should've somehow
Realized what you're not to do
I don't believe that anybody
Feels the way I do, about you now
And all the roads that lead you there are winding
And all the lights that light the way are blinding
There are many things that I
Would like to say to you but I don't know how
I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you're my wonderwall
I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me
And after all, you're my wonderwall
I said maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me
you're gonna be the one that saves me
you're gonna be the one that saves me

Analysis:

The Lyrics overall signify it is a love song. This is because there are many words suggesting this. Overuse of the words such as ' You're, I, me, my' suggests sense of belonging and wanting to be together with someone. Also, use of the word 'heart' is a massive clue to it being a love song due to it having a close relationship to the romance topic.
It also implies Barthes code.  Enigma is the clues given in within the song. Within Wonderwall the message is that Noel Gallagher (songwriter) is in love with someone. Action is the suspense of finding out who the person he's in love with. The action part links to the symbolic section. This is because fans would try to create theories and work out who he is speaking about. This was discovered to be a song about his now ex-wife. The symbolic is the fact he says 'There are many things that I, would like to say to you but I don't know how'. This shows binary postilion as he loves her but is scared to tell her. This basically him saying he's having a battle to get the courage to speak to her about his true feelings.

Overall, this is useful to my research into my final product as i now understand the true meaning to the song. The vibe of song has made me want to help display he songs meanings of love within the music video to suit it. Using typical stereotypes and conventions of the genre this can be doesn't to a good standard.

Oasis - Wonderwall - Music Video Analysis

Oasis - Wonderwall - Music Video Analysis:

Sound:
Within the music video diegetic sound is used throughout the whole music video with vocals and instruments are displayed with several shots showing them in time with the song. This links to Goodwin’s' theory with relationship between music and visuals matching to Liam Gallagher singing and the shot being on him.

Lighting:
Is very dull as the colour scheme is black and white throughout the song. This matches the conventions of the genre with colours being very dull. The guitars are blue and green in the song highlighting the importance of it within the song as the guitar is used throughout the period of the song.

Shot types:
These vary from close up shots to long shots. The close ups tend to either focus on the instrument being used or members of the band. However, there also long shots involving all the band together. There are also random shots of the messing about playing darts or sitting together. This is them trying to create a rapport with the audience to show they're ordinary lads having a mess about. This is done by the industry to try and create more fans ultimately creating more revenue for the company.

Narrative:
There is not a set narrative in the music video. It doesn't follow any of the structures that are normally there as it is non-linear. It is just a music video where they perform the song to an audience using the music video.

Representation:
It matches perfectly to the conventions of the genre. Wearing branded casual clothing, the setting being located in an abandoned urban building and a Britpop attitude.

This research is useful to me in order to execute the music video in a similar fashion, with a few adjustments, and make replicate it to the best of my ability.
